Sinuses are air pockets located to either side of the nose, behind the eyes and in the forehead. Sinusitis occurs due to the blockage of these air pockets caused by mucus, swelling, or a foreign body such as pollen or dust particles. Irritation in the ear such as itching can usually be caused by other symptoms such as Sinusitis and nasal congestion which can possibly also affect hearing and balance. The itchiness is usually caused when there is an inflammation in the middle ear (Otitis Media), due to the related symptoms such as Sinusitis causing an irritation in the ear. The auditory tube that connects the nose and throat to the middle ear works by balancing the pressure surrounding the eardrum. Mucus from the nose and throat can usually enter the middle ear through the auditory tube leading to fluid build-up, obstruction and possibly inflammation.
