Herbal Medicines : For thousands of years herbal medicine was the only medicine and was used all over the world to treat every kind of injury and disease. A great wealth of information and expertise was built up amongst the different peoples of the world regarding which plants were most useful for treating particular conditions. With the development of chemical drugs over the last century, there was a tendency in the UK for herbal medicine to be regarded as outdated and ineffective. It is only in the last ten years or so that Herbal Medicine has enjoyed a major revival and is now widely regarded as an important weapon in the armoury of healthcare. In most of the rest of Europe, herbal medicines always retained their reputation as 'mainstream' medicines and are sold alongside drugs in pharmacies everywhere. The market for herbals is vast as they are universally recognised as having a useful and important place in medical treatment.
Most medicine practised in the world today is herbal. Many chemical medicines are based on ingredients synthesised from plants, but in herbal medicines the actual herb is used. Herbal experts believe that the components of a plant may be synergistic and so by using the all the active part of the plant, e.g. the root or leaves or even the whole plant, enhances the healing properties.
Herbal medicines work by treating the underlying causes of a problem, not just to alleviate the symptoms. So although herbal medicines are genuine medicines, they are not 'magic bullets'- they need time to work. Patients should always be remember to take the full course and - with rare exceptions - not to expect results in just a day or two.

Using Herbal Medicines
- As with any medicine, care should be taken to read the label particularly regarding dosage instructions and cautions.
- In particular, some remedies - like any medicinal products - are not suitable for pregnant women or young children.
- Often herbal medicines need time to work. The effects may only become apparent after some days. Obviously cough medicines work quickly, but many herbal medicines need that longer term view in order to harness their ability to deliver the long term solution.
- Where you are already taking prescribed medicine, your doctor should be advised when additional OTC remedies - herbal or chemical are taken. Your doctor should be consulted before stopping the prescribed treatment.
- Over the counter (OTC) herbal medicines are generally known for being free from unwelcome side effects. If by any chance you notice a problem, the advice is to stop taking the product and consult a health professional.
- All medicines should be kept out of the hands of children.
- Do not use after the 'use by' date that is indicated on the product.
