Acne is a disease of the sebaceous hair follicle. The hair follicles, or pores, in your skin contain sebaceous glands (also called oil glands). These glands make sebum, which is an oil that lubricates your hair and skin. Under normal conditions, sebum travels up the hair follicle and out to the skin's surface. However, with acne, sebum is trapped within the follicle, clogging the follicle. The bacterium that seems to cause acne is called Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) and is present in everybody's skin, usually lodged in the hair follicle. The clogged follicle becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. When the sebaceous gland gets clogged, and sebum builds up inside the follicle, P. acnes multiplies rapidly and can result in acne.
As published in Dermatologic Surgery in 2007 (Volume 33 Issue 10,Pages 1228-1233), Red Light Phototherapy alone was studied in the treatment of acne vulgaris. The objective was to assess the efficacy of red light phototherapy with a portable device in acne vulgaris.
Twenty-eight volunteers with mild to moderate acne were treated with portable red light emitting devices in this split-face randomized trial. The right or left side of the face was randomized to treatment side and phototherapy was performed for 15 minutes twice a day for 8 weeks. Clinical photographs, lesion counts, and a visual analog scale (VAS) were used to assess each side of the face at baseline and Weeks 1, 2, 4, and 8, and a split-face comparison was performed. The researchers found that the percent improvement in noninflammatory and inflammatory lesion counts of the treated side was significant compared to the control side ( p <.005). visual analog scale decreased from 3.9 to 1.9 on the treatment side and the difference between the treatment and control sides was significant at Week 8 ( p <.005).They concluded that the study showed that red light phototherapy alone can be a new therapeutic option for acne vulgaris.

Red light occurs within the visible light spectrum. Although it does not penetrate as deep as near infrared, red light seems to help wounds heal more quickly. At a wavelength of 660nm, it penetrates tissue to a depth of 8-10mm and is beneficial in the treatment of problems close to the surface of the skin such as acne, wounds, cuts, and scars, and is particularly effective in treating infections. It can also be used to remove precancerous skin cells without scarring.
